JOB DESCRIPTION

Column is looking to hire a (Senior) Technical Product Manager, Payments to define and execute a strategy that addresses the payments needs of Column and our customers. They would use their deep understanding of the payment processing to prioritize, spec, design, and maintain stable and cost-effective flows across the full lifecycle of the customer experience. They will be responsible for prioritizing payment system improvements into a coherent payment roadmap, designing and spec’ing improvements to our payments system, considering payment system design from both a customer-centric and accounting point of view. The role will report directly to Group Product Manager Megan Villanueva.

What You'll Do

  • First Week: You will learn about Column's mission and vision and seek to understand our existing product. You will have set initial 1:1s with stakeholders who will inform your understanding of payments at Column. We're a small company that's growing quickly, so interpersonal rapport is essential.
  • First Month: You will have completed an initial discovery cycle of the problem landscape by being directly involved with solving pain points associated with payments workflows, talking with internal team members, and digging into customer data. You will transition to identifying opportunities for sustainable solutions and experiments to vet value.
  • First Six Months: You will have developed and executed on a Q2 2023 payments roadmap and tracked key results that quantify the impact. At this point, you will have developed a meaningful view of our long-term (extending past six months) payments strategy that supports Column’s growth.
  • First Year: You have set up a system of payments KPIs and seen measurable improvement in those KPIs, launched new payments features, enhanced internal reporting, and measurably improved the customer experience.

Our Ideal Candidate

  • You're looking for a remote-first role working with wildly talented people who care about their impact on local communities
  • You have experience developing payments infrastructure at a payments or tech company
  • You are comfortable developing and visualizing technical specs associated with billing and payment flows
  • You can negotiate timelines and influence internal and external stakeholders on a daily basis
  • You demonstrate systems thinking in the context of designing payments solutions or other problems
  • You consider yourself to be in the top 5-10% of people in terms of attention to detail — you are meticulous about system functions and the impact of code changes in spec writing
  • You exhibit curiosity for approaching problems in different ways and being able to identify the solution that most aligns with the outcome customers are trying to achieve
  • You are committed to making a positive contribution to our company culture by fostering a low-ego attitude and socially supportive community

Compensation and Benefits

Column is built on the belief that important information should be accessible to the public. As such, we work hard to model this behavior for potential Columnists by including our base compensation in all job descriptions and making our full benefits accessible online.

  • For US-based candidates, we offer a base salary of $120,000- $180,000, plus a meaningful equity stake and 401k plan with a 5% match
  • For candidates outside of the US, we use a market multiplier and 12-month trailing conversion rate to convert on-target earnings into local currency. We also offer a meaningful equity stake and retirement plans relevant to the country (e.g., a pension plan in the UK).
  • In addition, all Columnists receive healthcare, vision, & dental coverage for themselves and their dependents
  • Unlimited (and encouraged) paid time off with a suggested 15-day minimum, and 16-weeks paid parental leave
  • Multiple stipends for you to invest in a home office setup and pursue wellness activities that make you feel healthy and whole

DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION

Column is a venture-backed civic technology start-up dedicated to improving the distribution of public information, starting with public notice. From 2010 to 2019, less than 1% of funding deals went to LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs. And more than 1/3 or LGBTQ+ founders choose to keep their sexual orientation hidden while fundraising.** To support LGBTQ inclusion, Column's Founder and CEO, Jake Seaton, as well as our Head of Product, Annie Shugart, host conversations where they offer tips about succeeding as an LGBTQ+ founder and/or leader.

In addition, Column is a public benefit corporation, meaning we are dedicated to the interests of stakeholders — such as team members, publishers, and more — outside of investors. Column partners exclusively with venture firms that are supportive of our desire to build a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment. And, our 3-person Board of Directors collectively represent multiple intersectional identities that are underrepresented in technology, including women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals. As a remote-first company, we have team members living all over the world and promote a flexible work environment that enables all team members to flourish.
