LGBTQIA+ folks in techResearch Improving People's Lives (RIPL) is a tech-for-social-impact nonprofit. Our mission is to work with governments to help them use data, science, and technology to equitably improve policy and lives.
The Mission:
RIPL is a leading non-profit tech-for-social impact organization. We help government solve some of society’s most pressing challenges using data, science, and scalable, sustainable technology. Our work has supported data-driven policy improvements in health care, education, social insurance, civic participation, workforce development, and criminal justice.
In the early days of COVID-19, we partnered with Rhode Island to build a cloud-based Pandemic Unemployment Assistance system in just 10 days, making Rhode Island the first state in the nation to pay CARES act benefits to workers and families in need, and helping over 70,000 RI workers receive their unemployment benefits.
We are now expanding across the country — including Colorado, Hawai’i, New Jersey, and Washington — to use administrative data, ML/AI, and cloud technology solutions to help state and federal government connect millions of Americans with in-demand careers and streamlined benefits.
The Role:
As a member of the Technology Team, you will work with the Director of Technical Products to develop, deploy, and support innovative, science-powered products in partnership with government stakeholders and mission-aligned organizations. The System & Cloud Administrator will support both RIPL’s internal, cloud first technology stack and integrating our products in our partners existing technology environments. Expect to work with a broad set of technologies including AWS, Azure, traditional IT and hybrid IT environments. The System and Cloud Administrator will play a central role in supporting a team of highly technical users who use data, science, and technology to improve people’s lives!
This is an opportunity to work with forward thinking public-sector technology departments to assist with modernizing their technology stack while also supporting a highly technical, cloud first internal infrastructure & product stack. You will join a dynamic and cross-functional team of technology experts, policy leaders, and academic scientists from top research universities who believe in the power of data to make government work smarter and better for those in need. RIPL’s staff are located all over the country but stay connected with online chat, regular coffee hours and in-person time when travel is possible. As an organization we value quality over quantity and believe our government partners deserve the best. We know that changing culture and systems takes hard work, and we are committed to that work for the long term.

(2) Systems design task (1 to 2 hours). Take-home task to learn more about your approach to architecting a cloud solution. There are no wrong answers here.
(3) Technical interview (45-60 minutes). Learn more about RIPL's tech stack, walk through examples of your previous projects, and talk through some hypothetical scenarios.
(4) Group interview (45-60 minutes). Meet your potential teammates and learn more about RIPL's culture and day-to-day.
(5) Reference check and offer.
RIPL’s mission is to use data and science to equitably impact policy and improve lives. We know that to achieve this mission, we need to bring together a team with diverse backgrounds, experiences, ideas and skills to ask the right questions, challenge and partner with each other to use facts and rigorous analysis to answer those questions, and reflect and represent the diversity of the communities we serve.
When building our team, we are dedicated to cultivating an environment of inclusion and equity as we look for smart, passionate and collaborative scientists and engineers who share our commitment to building better lives for all Americans.
The RIPL organizational model encourages small, closely-knit teams that have the opportunity to be mentored by and engage in career growth opportunities from senior team members. We take the career development of our team members seriously, and are proud to cultivate organizational culture that promotes supportive, creative, and collegial relationships between and across teams. New team members often remark that they have never experienced an environment like RIPL's before -- one where colleagues are universally friendly, passionate, and eager to collaborate and brainstorm new ideas to help improve lives.
